The Inevitability of Change and How to Manage It


The world we live in (which organizations are part of) is an ever-changing one. This goes without  saying that change (which could be triggered from inside or outside an organization) is inevitable.

As a result of the inevitability of change, business by nature is not static, it is evolving. Organizations are duty-bound to innovate every so often in order to retain a top-of-mind awareness. Consumers' needs aren't static so no business should stay static.

Managing change is a complex exercise. From experience, I've realised that people by nature might relish the idea of improvement but making the necessary adjustments is always a challenge. Also, I've realised that gaining a deep insight into the prevailing issues and ascertaining the best approach to tackling them requires thorough investigation and an expansion of the scope of engagement within the organization and possibly outside the organization. 

It is important to mention here that there is need to involve all (or a good representation of all) who will be affected by the change in the process initiating and executing the change project. This helps in reducing resistance and engendering ownership. Ownership (by change agents and recipients) is central to effective management of change. 

This piece is meant to be an overview hence the need to keep it brief. There are lots of models that guide change management however my approach is one that advocates for a development of models that are unique to the peculiarities of each organization. In matters of this nature, best fit is more important than best practice.
